The children use their imagination to develop an invention, using ordinary or everyday items and turning them into something unusual or extraordinary. We start by looking at a jar of jam and discussing how the inventions from 'An Alien in the Jam Factory' evolved. We then look at different household objects and discuss their properties, before the children work in teams to develop an unusual invention of their own. This is then used as a basis for a piece of creative writing featuring their invention.

My workshops normally start with an introduction and a short bit of background on what sparked the ideas for 'An Alien in the Jam Factory'. Children then work to create a new alien character of their own. What do they look like? What are their powers? How can we make them different and unusual? Once the children have decided some key details, I work with them to build a piece of creative writing from the perspective of their new character.
Pets with Personality workshop
Super Jam workshop
Children work in teams and individually to create a new flavour of super-jam. We start by looking at strange and unusual fruit and vegetables and discussing how they might affect us, real or imaginary. The children then work together to develop a super-jam of their own, thinking about what power it will give them and how we could use it to build a piece of creative writing.
